Overnight we sailed from Livorno to the ancient port city of
Civitavecchia. This is the historical port for
the Eternal City of Rome. We had stayed
in Civitavecchia last fall for a couple days but it was wet and windy, so it was nice to be able to walk into the city in nice sunny and warm weather. Now that it is the beginning of the tourist
season, the main streets were much more crowded.

We have seen much of Rome in previous visits, so we decided
to take a tour of the countryside. Our
tour started with a trip to Bracciano Lake.
This is a large volcanic lake northwest of Rome. In the city of Bracciano there is a huge
castle that is still privately owned.
The owner rents out the estate for special occasions. Tom Cruise got married here.

At the other end of the lake there is a small village called
Anguillara with a wonderful boardwalk along the lake. Instead of going into the village we decided to stay on the boardwalk and enjoy gelato.

Our guide on this tour was an entertaining Italian lady, who
was determined to teach everyone Italian in the four hours allocated to the
tour. Although she was Italian, when she
spoke English I detected a British accent.
Maybe she has watched too much BBC on television.
After leaving Anguillara, we went to a wine tasting in
Cerveteri. The name of the winery was
Casale Cento Corvi. We did pick up a couple bottles of their Giaoche wine. The vines used for this wine came were grown from seeds found in an ancient Roman ruin. Apparently it has won awards in Italy. I’m beginning to think to win an award for
wine all you need to do is enter into a wine show.
Before dinner we went to show in the theatre. The headliner was an English singer named Sam
Kane. He had an OK voice but I thought his act was lame. His main claimed to fame was that portrayed
Dean Martin in the London West End production of the Rat Pack.
